I'm back.

This is going to all sorts of audiences, so I now need to spell out where I'm back to, and where I'm back from.

I maintained two blogs up until 2011. hellenisteukontos.blogspot.com was a blog about Greek linguistics, and opuculuk.blogspot.com was a blog about everything else. Hellenisteukontos in particular developed quite a following, and was even cited in print a few times.

I resumed writing online in 2015 at Quora (see my profile there), and I continued doing so until it became untenable for me to (see my statement). I dare say I developed a following there too.
One thing I did relearn during my stay on Quora was that I can write both about stuff I do know about, and stuff I actually don't know about—but with enough insight that I can make a reasoned argument. That's something I enjoyed doing greatly, and I hope to keep doing it. Just as I hope to keep sharing the expertise I have on things I am an expert in.

When I decamped from Quora, I followed an exodus of users to Medium (see my profile there), and I may have provoked a few others to join me. For all Quora's grotesqueries (and they are legion), Quora was a more congenial place to me than Medium: compared to my Quora feed (admittedly after two years of curation), Medium was a lot more clickbait, a lot more superficial, and a lot more full of sterile political posturing. I will continue to check in there with the Quora Diaspora, but I won't be making it my home.

So I'm coming home to the blogs I had left six years ago, but I am relocating them to Wordpress instances: http://hellenisteukontos.opoudjis.net and http://opuculuk.opoudjis.net. I encourage you to update any links you have to the prior blogs; I will not be updating them. I have migrated both my blogspot and my relevant Quora content to those two new instances on my website. Quora makes it very difficult to get your content out of its honeytrap, and none of the topics or comments export. I've spent a couple of days categorising the Quora posts; you'll pardon me if I don't manually retag them as well.

I have also broadened the scope of Hellenisteukontos: moving forward it will cover not the Set Intersection of Greek and Linguistics, but the Set Union. Greek culture, music, literature and history are in scope of it now; so is general linguistics and linguistics of other languages.

I won't be posting with the same level of frequency I did on Quora, a frequency that was clearly 
unsustainable. I aim to be doing larger essays, although I did plenty of essay writing on Quora anyway. But I will welcome people suggesting Quora questions for me to answer here. I will not be posting anything to Quora; my friends from Quora are free to do with my content what they will on Quora (so long as they link back here.)

I look forward to reconnecting with old friends and new, and I look forward to thinking out loud and posting what strikes my fancy, in a forum that I find more congenial.

Or: Why Nicholas will continue occasionally two take a tuthree weeks off blogging

As my readers—more loyal to me than I to them—have noted, I haven't written here for a little while: since I was in the States, in fact. The reasons why are properly a matter for The Other Place, but I've had a conspiracy of

1. being down because I'm back from overseas—which is starting to be a pattern;
2. having a big project at my day job, which has spilled into after hours;
3. having a big project at the TLG, which spilled further into my after hours; and
4. the temerity of going out on a few social outings. That, and
5. my next two projected posts, while having nothing to do with each other (vowel contraction and language shift in Kız Dervent, ausgerechnet), are both intimidating me away from writing.

Btw, (1) is why I haven't been replying to comments. And the chance to write two other posts instead (thank you Tipoukeitos and Tom) is why I can now circumvent (5).

But this too is becoming a pattern, which means there's a reason for it. It may be a quaint holdover from my academic (and pre-blogging) past, but I won't write the three-paragraph posts that allow people to put up five posts in a day. They're long-form posts, because that's how I write. Not just here, or The much-neglected Other Place: I inflict long-form posts on my day job group blog too, and they're even less natural to that discipline.

If I was writing in a journal for linguists, they wouldn't be long-form posts. Hellenisteukontos posts are "squibs", as linguists call them in journals: a paragraph's worth of linguistic content, not-a-paper. But by the time I put in my jokes and my background explanations and my cute digressions, and do my vulgarisation, they are a paper's worth in length. (A short paper, admittedly; this is still a blog.) And with that and my obsessive hyperlinking, they're three hours worth of work. So I do have to breathe in before I start a post.

Imagine if I actually read up on the literature as well. Good think I don't bother to. :-|

I don't tire of the three-hour posts or begrudge them; what I do here I find fulfilling, even if it is a consolation prize for not becoming an academic. But I am easily thrown off course from them; which means every few months, I will go offline a few weeks. The real worry is when I'm haven't been answering comments. Which has been gnawing at me. Even the πανάθεμά σε comment, which is going to be difficult for me to give a proper answer to; but yes, I will go through and reply to what I can.

The fact that my new job will be 5 mins drive from my house, instead of a half hour train ride, will not help my blogging either. Something my new employers sound relieved about. That, I'll deal with in July.

At any rate, I'm resuming transmission now, and I thank you for your ongoing patience.

King's College department threatened with closure

Someone of you will have already seen this posted on other blogs. The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies is being threatened with closure, as part of the restructuring planned for much of the School of Arts & Humanities (which will also do away with palaeography and computational linguistics). (For other coverage, see e.g. the History News Network, with extensive background, the Medieval News, A Don's Life, Language Log, and elsewhere.) For BMGS, the likely outcome is a merger into Classics—and winding down Byzantine & Modern Greek as distinct course offerings.

An online petition to save King's BMGS has been set up. As the HNN post points out, snail mail letters count for more:

Είναι κάτι που διερωτήθηκα όταν είδα το Νίκο το Σαραντάκο να μου 'γκινιάζει τα σχόλια εδώ στα εγγλέζικα, και ξανά όταν εγγλέζικα σχολίασε και ο Δύτης των Νιπτήρων. (Για το Γιώργο Μπαλόγλου δεν μου 'κανε και τόση εντύπωση, τον έχω συναντήσεις εις Αμέρικας περισσότερες φορές απ' όσες εν Ελλάδι.) Και κάτι που ξαναδιερωτήθηκα, όταν απόρησα πόσα από τα λογορροιακά μου χαμπαριάζουν οι φίλοι που έμαθαν τα ελληνικά ως δεύτερη (ή μάλλον ειπείν πέμπτη) γλώσσα—ο Φίλιπ, ο Σήφης—ή και μόνο ακουστά ως γλωσσοδίφες—ο Τζων—ή οι περαστικοί από το Google που έψαχναν Ρουμή ή την τιμή του ψωμιού στην Αθήνα το '30, και που βλαστημούν τη μοίρα τους γιατί η Μικρή Γραμματική της Πρώιμης Νεοελληνικής τους παραείναι μικρή (και πρώιμη).

Πρώτα απ' όλα λοιπόν, κακά τα ψέματα, πιο άνετα μου 'ρχεται να γράφω εγγλέζικα. Τέσσερα χρόνια έκανα μικρός στην Ελλάδα, και όλη μου η υπόλοιπη παιδεία και εντρύφηση είναι αγγλόφωνη. Ιδίως τώρα που δεν διαβάζω και τόσα στα ελληνικά (τώρα που δε διαβάζω δηλαδή), το ύφος μου στα ελληνικά παίρνει σίγουρα την κατηφόρα.

Δεύτερο, ε μην εκθειάζω και όλα μου τα κόμπλεξ εδώ, ας αφήσω και κάτι για τα Οπουτζουλούκια, αλλά έχω και 'γω ως μη-μητροπολιτικός έλληνας ένα κάποιο άχτι. Εγγλέζικα παναπεί, λοιπόν, κι οποιανού του αρέσει. Για αυτό εξάλλου και κόμπλαρα όταν απάντησε εγγλέζικα ο 40κος, γιατί εκείνου τι άχτι να έχω;

Το άχτι μάλιστα το επιδεικνύει και ο μικτός τουρκικός/φωνητικοαλφαβητικός τίτλος opɯcɯlɯklɑr. Ή το όταν έδωσα ομιλία σε διαλεκτολογικό συνέδριο, σε ταχύτατα και ιδιωματικά αυστραλέζικα—να σημειώσω πως η μόνη ανακοίνωση στα ελληνικά ήταν από ιταλίδα, γιατί στον παν/μειακό τομέα επαγγελματική κατοχύρωση σου κάνει τέλος πάντων η χρήση της αγγλικής· και όταν ρώτησα έναν από τους καλύτερους παριστάμενους τι εντύπωση είχε από τα λεγόμενά μου, με κοίταξε αργά και μου είπε «ε είσαι και native speaker...»

Υπάρχει και κάπως σοβαρότερος λόγος, που δένει με τους τυχαίους γκουγκλώντες από την Αίγυπτο και τη Γουατεμάλα. Ο λόγος δένει και με τον απώτερο σκοπό του ιστολογίου, άμα τον καταλάβω με το καλό κι εγώ ο ίδιος· διότι δεν θα με γέμιζε το κύριο μέλημά του να είναι κουτσομπολιά περί φαγωμάρας Δέφνερ–Περνό ή Μπελέλι–Χέσελιγκ. Αλλά όχι, σοβαρότερο είναι πως, όσο να 'ναι, υπάρχει ένα κενό στον ιστό για την νεοελληνική ιδίως ιστορική γλωσσολογία και διαλεκτολογία, που θα 'θελα να μειώσω.

Στην ιστολογοσύνη (ή κατά κόσμον ιστολογόσφαιρα) για την νεοελληνική γλώσσα, το Ηλληνιστεύκοντος μάλλον περιθωριακό φαντάζει (η θα φάνταζε, αν είχε ήδη σαφή σκοπό). Τα περισσότερα ιστολόγια ασχολούνται ή με θέματα γλωσσικής ρύθμισης και διαμάχης, ή σε δαυλοπλήκτων αναιρέσεις, ή σε ετυμολογία. Τα της ρύθμισης δεν με ενδιαφέρουν τόσο όσο όταν ήμουν μικρότερος, ιδίως όταν έχω χάσει επισόδια (από πότε δηλαδή αβγό;) Για τους δαυλόπληκτους συνέβαλα και γω τον οβολό μου στην αναίρεση του Λερναίου Κειμένου· αλλά τα σχόλια περί 40κου σε λημέρι των σταλινιστών γλωσσονειρώκτηδων μου δείχνουν πως όποιος το 'χει χάψει το χάπι, δεν το ξερνάει, που να τον βαράς με και τους δύο τόμους του λεξικού του Ποκόρνυ. Και καλή η ετυμολογία, αλλά νομίζω πως την καλύπτει καλύτερα και πιο ψυχαγωγικά ο 40κος από ό,τι θα τα κατάφερνα εγώ. Εγώ μάλλον μεταξύ φωνολογίας και σύνταξης θα αιωρούμαι.

Το κενό δεν είναι παντελές, ευτυχώς, και υπάρχουν πρωτοβουλίες σαν την Ανέμη ή την Πύλη για την Ελληνική Γλώσσα ή την Πρώιμη Νεοελληνική που διοχετεύουν υλικό και ενημερώσεις. (Και βέβαια οι παλιότερες ιστολογίες και βικιπαιδολογίες του Ντόκτωρ Μώσε.) Πάντως παρότι σαφώς και συνεχίζεται η δραστηριότητα στα πεδία αυτά, η πολλή δουλειά που έχει γίνει είναι προπολεμική, εκτός ιστού (non in rete sunt, non leguntur), και μάλλον ντεμοντέ (όπως ντεμοντέ είναι και η ινδοευρωπαϊκή ιστορική γλωσσολογία γενικά). Με το να παρουσιάζω κείμενα και αξιοπερίεργα—και κουτσομπολιά, ξαναφέρνω ελπίζω και εγώ στην επιφάνεια κάποια πράγματα που αδίκως παραμερίστηκαν από το χρόνο. Και ο πιο αποτελεσματικός τρόπος να έρχονται πράγματα στην επιφάνεια στον ιστό είναι ο αγγλόφωνος.

Έτσι ίσως εξιλεώνομαι κάπως που εγκατέλειψα τα γλωσσολογικά. Κι αυτό είναι μια μεγάλη και τεθλιμμένη ιστορία που μάλλον στα Οπουτζουλούκια πρέπει να καταχωρηθεί· αλλά μάζεψα στην πορεία της διατριβής μου (και του βιβλίου μου με το Γιώργο) αρκετό υλικό, που κάθεται παραχωνιασμένο κάτω από τη σκάλα ή στο γκαράζ. Καλό κάνω στο κάρμα μου να τα επισκέφτομαι πού και πού και να ανταποδίδω και κάτι στο σύμπαν. Δεν έχω πειστεί πως το υλικό το εκμεταλλεύτηκα όσο έπρεπε, ίσως δώσω έναυσμα αλλού. (Και πού και πού και στον εαυτό μου.)

Σε κάποιους που μάλλον δεν θα 'ναι γλωσσολόγοι, γιατί οι γλωσσολόγοι έχουν τα συγγράμματά τους και τα συνέδριά τους και τα περιοδικά τους και το καθιερωμένο peer review, οπότε έχουν τον τρόπο τους ήδη να ανταλλάσουν πληροφορίες. Αλλά έτσι όπως έχει εξελιχθεί ο κόσμος, με το Τείχος Της Ηλεκτρονικής Συνδρομής να αποκλείει τα περισσότερα επιστημονικά περιοδικά από ελεύθερη πρόσβαση, ένα ιστολόγιο γίνεται πιο αποτελεσματικό στο να διοχετεύει πληροφορίες στο google (καταπώς έχω ήδη προσέξει). Σαφώς όχι πιο επιστημονικός: είναι κομμάτι θλιβερό, την περίτεχνη επιχειρηματολογία ενός καλού γλωσσολογικού άρθρου να την εκτοπίζει λόγω blogspot, ξέρω γω, κάποιο επιφανειακό σχόλιο τύπου «μπας και το μετά χαράς ήταν καθαρεύουσα της εποχής;» Αυτό όμως σημαίνει απλά πως χρειάζονται περισσότερα ιστολόγια, που έχουν κι αυτά το ρόλο τους—και περισσότερα άρθρα Ανοικτής Πρόσβασης. Δεν αναιρεί την επιστημοσύνη το ιστολόγιο κατ' ανάγκην· μπορεί να την συμπληρώσει. (Ευτυχώς ο Νότης καταλαβαίνει τι εστί ιστός, οπότε δεν εκτοπίζεται διόλου: Toufexis, Notis. 2008. Diglossia and register variation in Medieval Greek. Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies 32: 203-217.)

Και τέλος, το να γράφω στα αγγλικά για τα ελληνικά όλο και κάποιες καινούργιες επαφές και ανταλλαγές θα προκαλέσει. Κάποια στιγμή, κάποιος πέρσης ή ισραηλινός θα συνισφέρει κάτι σχετικό σε μια συζήτηση, που αν γινόταν μόνο στα ελληνικά δεν θα την εντόπιζε. Για να μην ξεχνάμε κι ότι αν μπω περισσότερο, όπως σκοπεύω, στα χωράφια των παλιότερων σταδίων της ελληνικής, θα θέλω να τραβήξω στην κουβέντα και ειδικούς που τους είναι πιο οικεία η αρχαία παρά η νέα ελληνική. (Αυτό ιδίως αν ασχοληθώ με τη λόγια βυζαντινή, που την έχουν φτύσει οι πάντες ως τεχνητή γλώσσα. Κάτι που δεν ξενίζει όσο ίσως θα έπρεπε έναν παλιό θιασιώτη της Εσπεράντο, της Λόζμπαν και της Κλίγκον...) ...Read more

First Post

This is to kick open this blog. I will post here every now and then on things in the linguistics of Greek (and Greece) that strike me, or that I feel like sharing with the Long Tail. The blog should contain lots of notes about the oddities I find in lemmatising the TLG (ancient, mediaeval, and early modern—it's quite a rollercoaster); or quirks in Greek dialectology that I fell across during my doctorate. Instead, it will probably have way too many posts baiting Greek nationalists about minority languages, which is altogether easier.

The blog will also have much too much grousing about how I'm no longer a linguist, which you should tune out judiciously...
