Spanish is a good example: Latin REGULA(M) 'rule' gives us three Spanish words: reja 'grid', regular 'regular' (okay, from REGULARIS), and regla 'rule'.

Reja has the regular development REGULA > REGLA > OSp /redʒa/ > /reʒa/ > /reʃa/ > ModSp /rexa/; exactly where the semantic shift happens, I don't know. Regular is an ordinary borrowing, or cultismo as they are called in Spanish. But regla is an oddball; it cannot be quite vernacular because of the /gl/, but it is not a straight borrowing either.

These words are pretty common in Spanish, and are called semicultismos, which could be glossed 'semi-learnèd words'. They arise where vernacular and Latin forms are in competition for mind-share among the educated, and the result is a sort of blend, Latin spoken in Spanish, so to speak. Sometimes the semicultismo fully displaces the vernacular word: thus, the Spanish reflex of FRUCTU(S) is not the expected frucho but rather fruto, where the consonant cluster has collapsed but without the usual spirantization.John Cowanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11452247999156925669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1291147930399569160.post-86577961705702080132011-01-06T03:18:34.569+11:002011-01-06T03:18:34.569+11:00Very interesting post (and with evidence). It is true that hiatus has more to do with register nowadays; still I think the minimal pairs like άδεια-άδγια will be still around for long, I believe.dm3khttp://dm3k.menoreply@blogger.com
